As genealogists we are very conscious of the heritage to be found in
old cemeteries. Very often, cemetery records may provide the only clue to
a lost generation of a family. Generally, early vital records are
incomplete, family records lost or forgotten in an attic and obituaries
sketchy. Information from cemeteries fills the gap.
Over the years the Heart O' Wisconsin Genealogical Society and other
volunteers have indexed most of the cemeteries in Wood County. We are in
the process of making this index available on-line and will be adding
cemeteries on a regular basis, so check back if the cemetery you are
looking for is not available yet. The smaller cemeteries will be added
first, and the larger cemeteries after that.
The existing index
consists of a card catalog, indexed by surnames. The surname card lists
each individual by their first name and/or initials with a corresponding
Cemetery Book Number and page number. Each Cemetery Book has a map of the
cemetery, directions to the cemetery, graves by section/row, and an index
of the surnames. It is easy to find a particular individual or a group of
surnames, by checking the card catalog and then looking in the appropriate
Cemetery Book listed. This index is located at the
McMillan Memorial Library.
